Single Parents- Prioritising- Self care

Single parents burnouts are real. Prioritizing self-care will help them stay present in the moment. See this guide for simple self-care tips.

We get it—being a single parent in India can be quite a challenge. It’s tough and, honestly, a bit lonely. Even if you made a thoughtful choice to do this alone, it doesn’t mean it’s always a walk in the park. There are days when it feels like you’ve run a marathon, and bedtime for the kids becomes your finish line.

But here’s the thing: you’ve got to take care of yourself too. It might seem like there’s no time for that, but trust these words; you need it.

Permit yourself to do something just for yourself– reading a book or watching your favourite show. Remember, you’re not just a parent but a person too. Taking time for self-care isn’t just a luxury; it’s necessary to keep you moving, strong, and ready for whatever parenting throws your way.

What is Self-Care?

Self-care is an act of survival. Picture this: you ask yourself, “How am I feeling, and what do I need right now?” That’s your superpower. Putting your needs first isn’t wrong; it’s how you recharge. Whether you’re a single mom or dad, self-care is your secret weapon against parental stress.

Start small—read a chapter, walk, or binge-watch guilt-free. When you invest time in yourself, you’re building up energy, stamina, and inner strength. Maybe it’s a cosy night with a favourite book, a peaceful stroll in the park, or a heartfelt chat with a friend—do what rejuvenates you.

Effects of Neglecting Yourself

Listen up; being a single parent is challenging. On top of it, ignoring self-care piles up and adds to the stress you’re already feeling. Managing your commitments can weary you emotionally as well as physically. It’s crucial to process your feelings daily after a breakup, loss, or other disappointment. Do not ignore it—your well-being counts, and expressing your emotions helps you overcome problems.

Exploring self-care

Both men and women are vulnerable to situations.  Parents, regardless of gender, must prioritize self-care. Consider all of these tips for your overall health. You deserve strength, despite others’ opinions. Let those societal norms take a back seat.

Physical self-care

Start with bite-sized exercises – even a short walk works wonders. There is no need for grand gestures; a quick stretch or a dance party with the kids can lift your spirits. Sneak in some “me time” by scheduling short workouts – you’ll thank yourself later. And remember, hydration, healthy, timely meals, and decent sleep are your power allies. Small steps lead to significant results.

Emotional self-care

Don’t discredit your feelings; they’re valid. Find a friend or support group to share your thoughts with. Create a daily ritual just for you, like journaling or hobby time. Don’t forget laughter; watch a funny movie or chat with someone who makes you smile. And always remember, it’s okay to ask for help. You’re strong, but everyone needs a little support sometimes.

Social Care- Relations

While emotional self-care dives into activities that bring you joy, relational self-care focuses on building and maintaining healthy connections with others. Maintain regular contact with family and friends: plan video chats, coffee dates, or just a brief chat. Share your triumphs and setbacks. Create a support system, be bold, and ask for help.

Spiritual self-care

It isn’t just about prayer but also attracting good vibes. Find moments of peace, whether through a quiet walk or deep breathing. Connect with nature—feel the earth beneath your feet and the breeze on your face. Reflect on gratitude, focusing on the positives. Explore the activities that bring you a sense of purpose. For instance, try meditating in a quiet space at home.

How to take care of yourself as a Single Parent

Whether you’re a single mom or a dad, looking after yourself is vital to building inner strength. So, let’s talk about how to be more emotionally available for yourself—that’s a game-changer.

Love Yourself:

Treat yourself with kindness; have a cup of coffee, or go out on a date with yourself. Enjoy your own company. Its the best form of care

Exercise

We all know that exercise is a great way to release happy hormones in the body. Get moving, cycling, walking, or going to the gym; whatever form of exercise you enjoy, do it. Do it often.

Pen down Your Feelings

Journaling is a very effective tool. Sometimes, if you feel overwhelmed to write, drop a voice note to yourself, saying its ok. But get your feelings out on pen and paper or through other means.

Cook a Meal

Cooking can be therapeutic. If you like to cook, the best way to nurture your soul is to have the aroma of spices in your kitchen. Bake or try a new dish, and see how satisfied you will feel.

Self-care is not an option. As the saying goes, you cannot pour from an empty cup. Likewise, single dads need to let go of what society thinks. Sometimes, dads have to put up a brave face and be warriors. That doesn’t mean that they have to neglect themselves.

Taking care of yourself is a strength, too, and asking for help is okay. Everyone deserves a bit of care, regardless of gender.
